Open house

New faculty are cordially invited to an open house on the third floor of Razran Hall, which houses three important sources of institutional support for faculty: the new Educational Technology Lab, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Writing Across the Curriculum. Come celebrate the opening of the new Ed Tech Lab, meet the people involved, and learn more about the functions and services of CTL and WAC. This will be an informal forum, and you’re encouraged to bring along your mentor or a colleague, if you wish; light refreshments will be served.

In a talk titled "The call of teaching", Professor Robert Gurland (NYU) will describe the essential expectations teachers have --- or should have --- of their students, and the impediments teachers face in the context of the contemporary university structure.

High tea on teaching and research

For our last forum for new faculty this academic year, new faculty and their mentors are cordially invited to high tea with a group of Queens College scholars who will share their thoughts on the relationship between teaching and research.

Our discussants, drawn from last year's Strategic Planning Committee on the Balance of Teaching and Research, include:

  • Andrew Beveridge (Sociology)
    Why teaching hardly counts for full-time faculty, especially when it's outsourced to adjuncts
  • Susan Croll (Psychology)
    Scholarly engagement: The process of turning students into colleagues
  • Robert Engel (Chemistry & Biochemistry)
    Teaching and research is like sex and violence: How do you separate them?
  • Jeff Halperin (Psychology)
    Using the laboratory milieu to facilitate education and training concurrently at the undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels
  • Steven Schwarz (Physics)
    PLAS and W courses in the sciences

New faculty Friday

New faculty are invited to attend a roundtable discussion that will cover topics of interest and relevance to someone growing roots in the Queens College community and looking to successfully navigate the QC infrastructure to reach personal and professional goals in an academic career.

This will be the first of two roundtable events for the fall semester.

Philip Anderson will lead discussions on how to tackle your academic career at Queens, and achieve satisfaction (and success) as you balance teaching, research, and service.

Professor Anderson brings a wealth of knowledge to the table from his experience studying education and teaching undergraduates, masters and doctoral students. He is Professor of Secondary Education at Queens and Professor of the Ph.D. Program in Urban Education at the Graduate Center. He is formerly Department Chair and Acting Dean of Education at Queens, and Executive Officer of Ph.D. Program at the Graduate Center. His most recent publication is Pedagogy Primer, Peter Lang, 2009.
