You and your colleagues are invitated to attend the
8th Annual CUNY IT Conference - December 4, 2009 at John Jay College.

This year's conference, again chaired by George Otte, has somehow managed to surpass previous conferences in both the quantity and quality of the presentations, as a look at the program will confirm, but it also builds on prior successes -- notably with the return, by popular demand, of last year's highly successful keynoter, David Pogue, New York Times technology columnist, Emmy-winning CBS news correspondent, and best-selling author.

The Conference begins at 9:15am with Check-in for Registrants, Vendor Exhibits, and Breakfast. The first set of concurrent presentations will start at 9:45am. At 11:00am, we will hear from our Keynote speaker, David Pogue. Lunch will be provided from 12:10pm -2:10 in the Exhibit area. Concurrent presentations will resume at 12:40pm and continue to 4:00pm, followed by a wrap-up session in the Exhibit area. A special feature of the day will be the presentation of the 5th Annual Mike Ribaudo Award for Technological Innovation.

The Conference Program is available at the URL below, which also links to the Conference e-registration application. Given previous years' "full house" attendance, I urge you to register in advance. Registration is free to all members of the CUNY community, but space is limited.

Here is where you go to view the Conference Program and to register:

      Abstract:

Corrective feedback has inspired one of the most vigorous bodies of research in second language acquisition. In this talk, I momentarily step outside the frame of corrective feedback and ask a related but broader question: how do we respond to learner contributions whether they are correct or not? To answer this question, I use the high-powered lens of conversation analysis (CA) to reveal classroom life as it is lived, where in giving feedback, teachers manage complex and often competing demands on a moment-by-moment basis. Using video data from adult ESL classrooms, I problematize some of the taken-for-granted feedback practices addressed respectively to correct and incorrect learner contributions: (1) explicit positive assessments (e.g., /very good/) and (2) feedback aimed at promoting self-discovery (e.g., /Something is wrong here. Can you figure out what?/). I argue that (1) what is affectively preferred may be developmentally dispreferred and that (2) a delicate balance needs to be struck between promoting self-discovery and providing interactionally contingent help.

      The Praxis of Feminist Pedagogy

The Feminist Pedagogy Conference is a venue for conversation between scholars, students and activists across disciplines around the present state of feminist pedagogy and work on gender, both within and beyond the academy. This year's conference includes panels and papers on a wide array of issues, ranging from teaching for social justice, to feminist pedagogy in the museum setting, to teaching survivors of war trauma.

University courses often ask students to use sources (academic essays, books, newspaper and magazine articles, etc.) to join disciplinary debates and conversations.
Can you own a sound? As hip-hop rose from the streets of New York to become a multibillion-dollar industry, artists such as Public Enemy and De La Soul began reusing parts of previously recorded music for their songs. But when record company lawyers got involved everything changed. Years before people started downloading and remixing music, hip-hop sampling sparked a debate about copyright, creativity and technological change that still rages today.

All students, faculty, and staff are invited.

Speaker: Matthew Boyd Goldie (Rider University)

A lecture sponsored by the English Department and Writing Across the Curriculum

We tend to think of an island as enclosed and isolated, as a paradise or a hell of solitude, a jail or a fortress. Science has regarded islands as ideal isolated sites for observation and as fragile ecologies that can be easily destroyed by outside contact. Perceptions of physical isolation extend to the temporal status of islands so that their cultures and inhabitants are thought of as cut off from progress, modernity, even time itself. These ways of thinking about islands have a history that begins in the Early Modern period with works such as Thomas More’s Utopia, William Shakespeare’s Tempest, and John Donne’s Meditation 17. This tradition continues in modified ways in modern theory by Gilles Deleuze, Antonio Benítez-Rojo, and others.

But how else might we consider islands? Recent island theory by Pacific Island writers, by scientists, and by others challenges preconceptions about insular space and time, and encourages us to contemplate islands in other ways. However, even these reconsiderations overlook an older history of understanding islands. Greek, Roman, and medieval writings about islands and maps can help us question and think through ideas about what constitutes a continent versus an island, how we consider individual territories around the world, how we orient ourselves on the earth, and ultimately how we might recognize a homeland.

Goldie is a scholar of medieval literature and author of Middle English Literature: A Sourcebook (Blackwell) and the forthcoming The Idea of the Antipodes: Place, People, and Voices. His talk draws on this new book and will focus on representations of islands in literature.

The goals of the workshop are to begin to learn Middle States’ language concerning assessment (i.e., learning outcomes), and then break into small groups specific to each PLAS category. Each small group will discuss its PLAS category in relationship to existing syllabi for the courses and faculty experience teaching those courses. These groups will then begin to develop learning outcomes for their categories that can be used to satisfy Middle States and also to communicate with others in the same PLAS category about shared learning goals.

The ideal participant is a tenured faculty member that has submitted a PLAS course proposal that has been approved or that teaches a course that has been approved as a PLAS course.

You are invited to a faculty roundtable discussion about Facebook and its role in the classroom, from 12:15pm to 1:30pm on March 16th, 2009.

Our students devote a lot of time and attention to the social networking website Facebook. As a faculty member who is vying for some of that time and attention, does it make sense for you to be using Facebook in your course? This roundtable discussion will address both pedagogical issues – for example, the ramifications of bringing an informal tool into a formal learning environment – and the technical means that the Facebook software offers to address some of these concerns. We’ve invited a few faculty members who have used Facebook in the past to communicate with their students to discuss the advantages and problems of integrating the technology into their teaching. This session is open to any faculty member who is interested in the intersection of Facebook and the classroom, whether you are a skeptic or an ardent user yourself.

The discussion is being held during the free hour, so please feel free to bring your own lunch. Coffee, beverages, and dessert will be provided. Seating is limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested in attending, please register online at http://qcpages.qc.cuny.edu/ctl/rsvp/16Mar09/.

      Revolutionary Grammar

Faculty are invited to participate in an upcoming workshop hosted by the Writing Across the Curriculum program. Faculty Associates from Bard College's Institute for Writing & Thinking will lead two concurrent all-day workshops entitled "Revolutionary Grammar" on Friday, February 20.

Everyone—inside and outside the academic community—has an opinion about grammar. Parents, CEOs, and of course teachers worry that students graduating from high school and college do not know grammar. But what does it mean to know grammar? If it were simply a matter of learning rules, teachers would not be struggling to correct grammar in paper after paper. In any case, basic grammatical rules don't stick.

This workshop looks at both philosophical and practical questions surrounding the teaching of grammar, investigating connections between philosophical and pedagogical approaches. What assumptions about written language's relationship to grammar do we bring to our teaching of writing? Using diverse literary texts and our own writing, we ask what grammar is, what it is for, what it contributes to the making of meaning and to creative expression, and how it fits into the more fluid models for teaching writing that we value. Workshop participants learn practical approaches to teaching grammar that do not focus on rules so much as incorporate rules into students' intuitions and habits as writers. This workshop is for teachers of English, composition, or grammar, as well as for any teacher who addresses issues of grammar in whatever subject they teach.

10:30 AM - 5 PM

Course management systems, like Blackboard, have been identified as "mission-critical" for teaching and learning (ECAR, 2007, p.14).

The Center for Teaching and Learning and the Educational Technology Laboratory invite QC faculty to participate in a two-day workshop (spanning three days---see below) on the use of course management systems to enhance pedagogical objectives and facilitate course design and course delivery.

Joined by faculty who will share their expertise in teaching and technology with us, we will explore alternative models that facilitate or enhance content delivery, asynchronous collaboration, assignment submission, and student performance assessment. Participants will also work independently on designing components for a course of their choice, and will share their progress with the group.

The workshop involves two face-to-face sessions (in Razran Hall, rooms 318 and 360) on June 11 and June 13, scheduled from 10:30 AM to 5 PM; participants will work (remotely or in Razran 360) on June 12.

Participants will receive a $700 stipend. A light breakfast and a lunch will be served Wednesday and Friday.

Space is limited and seats will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. To RSVP online, click on this link.

New faculty and faculty working on courses for the new general education curriculum are especially encouraged to participate.

Becoming fluent in academic discourse: Stories from a multilingual campus
Co-sponsored by WAC and FYI

This workshop explores the development of fluency in academic discourse, by examining how students perceive this process and what teachers can do to facilitate it. Academic prose (and its discipline specific variations) is a code that none of us speak &#151 or write &#151 natively. We will attempt to identify the hurdles faced by all learners, and the variables that promote success.

The workshop will also include a brief presentation of this year's issue of Revisions, guest edited by John Troynaski and this year's team of CUNY Writing Fellows.

Participants receive a $200 stipend and a copy of this year's issue of Revisions. Lunch will be served.

Registration for this event is now closed. We have relocated to the Agora.

Time: 11:30 am to 2:30 pm
Location: Agora Cafe, Student Union

Baruch College’s General Education Committee devised this year's theme (Gen Ed: Making it Work and Making it Matter ) to be broad enough to include all aspects of General Education. We are particularly interested in areas such as best practices and assessment (Does our teaching work? How do we know?) and student engagement (Do students care? What might encourage them to care?). We’re very interested in innovative approaches such as learning communities, e-portfolios, and service learning — how we use them and how we know whether they work. Proposals on these and other topics will be gratefully received.

In this three-day intensive training session, followed up by semester-long assistance, full-time faculty will develop pedagogies and materials for courses to be taught fully online or as hybrids.

A fully online course involves no face-to-face meeting time; a hybrid course meets face-to-face, regularly or only at the beginning and/or end of the semester, replacing a substantial amount of meeting time with online synchronous or asynchronous activities. Courses with heavy online components deliver lectures, assignments, and other course material using various technologies, including course management tools (like Blackboard), discussion boards, online chat rooms, wikis, blogs, and virtual classrooms.
