CALL FOR PROPOSALS
CUNY's 8th Annual IT Conference
John Jay College of Criminal Justice
Friday, December 4, 2009

Instructional/Information Technology in CUNY: Managing Complexity

The City University of New York will hold its 8th annual all-day conference devoted to instructional and information technology the first Friday in December 2009. Stressing the need to handle not just escalating change but increasing complexity, the conference will offer overviews of the University's key IT initiatives, discussions of how technology continues to change instruction, research, and administration, and a chance to hear from CUNY's faculty and IT leaders as well as to meet with vendors.

As always, the concurrent sessions will provide, in a rich array of presentations, a broad range of topics of interest to CUNY faculty, technology staff, and college administrators. Given the growing reliance on educational and administrative uses of IT by faculty, students, and staff, our increasing dependence (and interdependence) makes us especially interested in the following issues:

1. What works?: How has technology not just changed but improved our instructional and administrative practices? What tests have been met? What value added? What innovations deserve to be extended and duplicated?

2. What works together?: What mixtures of modes or services are available? Are we moving to the use of "mash-ups" in teaching and administration, combinations of applications that work together? How do we manage and sustain such combinations?

3. What helps us work together?: What innovations allow us to be mutually supportive? What are we doing in the way of training and mentoring? How are we spreading the word to colleagues, introducing them to new methods and technologies?

4. What points to a shared direction?: What changes on our horizon are most promising, most scalable and sustainable? What developments call for collaborative and strategic thinking? What changes are especially important to a multi-campus university?

Proposals should be between a paragraph and a page in length, and should include a title as well as the name and campus affiliation of each presenter. (Proposals may be made for group as well as individual presentations.) Submit a proposal using the form at

Please note: as of August 17th, the Fellows are fully booked for the fall semester. However, we may be able to connect you with a colleague who is working with a Fellow so that you can observe a workshop in his/her class on a similar topic. To help us determine this, please fill out the online registration form by clicking on the registration link below (at the bottom of the invitation) and choose the in-class workshops. We will be in touch as soon as possible with more information about whether and how we might be able to accommodate your request.

Attention Writing Intensive instructors:

CUNY Writing Fellows are available to work with you and your students. Writing Fellows—PhD students from the Graduate Center who are specially trained to teach writing—are available to help you find and develop the resources you need to address your students' needs with regard to writing.

There are two specific ways this collaboration can take place:

1. In-class workshops
A Writing Fellow can visit your course to conduct a workshop with your students on just about any element of writing or the writing process—for example, a fellow might help students devise or test thesis statements, generate ideas or research questions, develop structure, integrate sources, or work on revision or peer response.

2. Dedicated Fellow
The second option is to work with a Writing Fellow who will be integral to the course for the duration of the semester. If you're interested in this, you can request a dedicated Fellow who will work with you from the beginning of the semester, to help strategize about in-class writing activities, the sequencing of assignments, workshops in and outside class, etc. Note, however, that Writing Fellows are prevented contractually from working as readers or graders of student writing. They may read student writing in order to facilitate a workshop, or to consult with students individually, but they cannot serve as readers in the sense that a T.A. might. Nonetheless, they can be a valuable asset to a course, providing students with additional writing instruction and helping to integrate the writing and intellectual content of a course.

If you are interested in this resource, please register online by Friday August 14th here or at this url: http://qcpages.qc.cuny.edu/Writing/rsvp/fellowf09/.

We encourage you to incorporate this resource in your syllabus; we can’t guarantee placement but we will confirm whether a fellow is available for your course the week of August 17th. (Because six Fellows serve the College's four Divisions, we can't always accommodate all requests, but we will make every attempt to do so.)

The Center for Teaching and Learning, the Writing Across the Curriculum program and the Educational Technology Lab are pleased to announce the opportunity for faculty to incorporate weblogs into their courses during the approaching fall '09 semester.

Our current license is for 1,000 users, and course blogs will be created on a first-come, first-served basis. If you're interested in using Movable Type in a course this fall, please register online by August 14.

This opportunity comes as part of the college's ongoing pilot program with Movable Type blogging software. A flexible, user-friendly software, Movable Type has been used in more than 75 classes over the past six semesters. Both faculty and students have been very enthusiastic. Students have been energized by the process of authoring blogs, and faculty have been impressed by the quality of the writing that emerges when students are writing in the public forum created by the blogs. You can read more about the project in an article in an issue of FYI.

The CTL, WAC and the Lab will offer support--both technical and pedagogical--for the software, including an orientation meeting, workshops on MT’s advanced capabilities, and in-class demonstrations as needed. You can get a sense of the software and the support available by taking a look at the MT portal page, "Blogging at Queens College," and the support page, "Blog Tutorials" :

Typically, faculty have used Movable Type in one of the following ways:

1. To create individual blogs, linked to each other through a blogroll, for every member of a course.

2. To create a single blog to which every member of a course or department has posting privileges.

3. To offer students templates for uploading Web content and creating student-authored Web pages.

4. To create individual blogs within an interface that doubles as a course home page.

Movable Type can be used in other creative ways as well, such as a platform from which to present an on-line publication. See (on-line, powered by Movable Type) the spring '08 issue of WAC's Revisions 'zine.

If you have questions about using the software so that it's manageable and serves your course goals, or if you would like links to some sample blogs so you can see what the software can do, please contact Boone Gorges by email (Boone.Gorges@qc.cuny.edu) or phone (718-997-4857).
