| If you've accumulated a large number of entries, or if you simply like to be organized, you might like to take advantage of Movable Type's category feature. This feature allows you to add labels to both your new and old entries, making it easier for you (and your readers) to find the entries you're looking for. | ![]() |
| If this is your first time using categories on your blog, the first thing you'll need to do is reconfigure your New Entry administration screen. (If you've already done this step, click here to move on.) Near the bottom of the New Entry screen, click "Customize the display of this page". Warning: If there is unsaved text on this page, it will be lost by moving to the next step. To prevent this, click the "Save" button before continuing. | ![]() |
| On the window that pops up, select the "Custom" radio button in the left hand column, and put a check next to "Category" on the right. Click "Save" to continue. | ![]() |
| You'll be taken back to a slightly different looking Create New Entry page--in particular, a Category box will have appeared next to the Title box, and the Status box will have moved below the Entry Body box. Once you've composed your entry, click on the Category drop-down menu. If you see the category you want, choose it. If not (as will be the case if this is your first time using categories) choose "Add new category...". | ![]() |
| A new window will appear. Enter the name of your category and click "Save". | ![]() |
| The category you've chosen will now appear in the Category box. Movable Type will save this category name, so that you can apply it to other entries in the future. To see the results, finish your current entry, and then publish, save, and rebuild your site. | ![]() |
| A list of your categories will now appear on the right-hand column of your blog's main page. Click on the category heading to see only those entries that fall under the category. Keep in mind that you can even apply categories to an entry you've already written, by clicking on that entry's title on your blog's admin page. | ![]() |
