Final Project Proposal

So here it is... the big proposal. I am still thinking of expanding on the piece I brought in to be workshopped, and through the representation of one event through different eyes, reflect upon the subjectivity of consciousness. Perhaps? Though now I have also been thinking about Lauren Slater and the autobiographical lie...

... I was thinking about writing something about the cataract I was born with in my right eye. And maybe interweave my "biographical lie" with info about sight, thoughts on subjectivity, the way we all view the world differently.

Let me know what you think!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Jenna. I think either project can work. The piece you workshopped certainly had potential and is worth expanding. But the autobiographical lie, with the cataract angle, seems just as interesting. Ultimately, only you can decide.

One way to help figure it out might be to articulate the "motivating question(s)" at the heart of both projects. What do you want to investigate by writing them? Once you spoken these questions out loud, or written them down, it might help you see which you want to pursue.

Jessica:

I really like the idea of sticking to one event and having it be seen through the eyes of different people.

I kept thinking about the movie Go, where there is one event. and you get the stories of all 4 people involved, this way all the small missing pieces come together at the end.

The idea of sight and the autobiographical lie is interesting as well. You may want to incorporate "blind sight" into your story. Maybe your character is blind and doesn't know it.

Jenna,

I remember your use of the second person and how well executed that was, how provocative for the reader. So it is good to hear that you are planning to deepen that piece. Your idea about the cataract, I think, is brilliant in that it allows to play with the metaphor of seeing. If you think about some of the "sight" we did, I would imagine this would give you many ways to discuss clarity, or fineness or any host of things, both physically and symbolically, great ideas!

thanks and hope you had a good thanksgiving.

Lucy:

I think you should go with the piece you already workshopped in class. Not that the other wouldn't work as well. But the one on the subway was so delightful, I'd really like to see more of it.
