The Zen Waiting Room

Remember all those times when you tried to clear your head to meditate or free-write and you just couldn't do it? Well, I've come up with the solution. Introducing The Zen Waiting Room.

Here's a real-life testimonial from some strange man I found off the street.

I was waiting for my friend Joel to get out of rehearsal. And I'm in the atrium of The Goldstein Theatre. So I says to myself, alright, John, time to entertain yourself to pass the time. Let's use that brain to think of something. And I just couldn't do it. Nothing was in my head--now that I needed there to be. Ain't that a kick in the teeth?

Now that I've discovered the secret to true inner peace and quiet I'm going to pass on this service to you. For one payment of $250 I will make you wait for me in a cold, dark room by yourself for an hour--so you can truly focus. What's $250 (plus delivery fees) when compared with clarity of consciousness? Call now! Operators are standing by!

Valerie :

Alright- this is really random and probably not the case but I had such nausea reading this because I know a Joel going to QC who is trying to become an actor. Three and a half years ago him and my best friend broke up. They were together four years and during that time, Joel and I had also become friends, well, until he went deep into a self-destructive pattern. Life's been peaceful without him but then a week ago he made two appearances in my life- both were very unwelcome because he was claiming that my friend was insane and needed to be committed. He was spewing lies and ranting. Not good. It honestly scares me when someone creates that kind of reality through one lie they stick by so strongly it turns into their truth.

Anyhow, I know he also has a friend Jon, and when I read this it just reminded me of my upset over his disturbing state of life right now (he wears his hair really long and doesn't shave because he wants to be Jack Sparrow). I should have seen this coming. He used to make reservations under the name Tyler Durden. Yikes. I believe I must have been unconscious back then.

Lucy:

Unfortunately, not being able to focus the mind is not the same as having the mind free for meditation, which requires its own focus, even though not on the mundane details of one's life. So I don't think waiting in the cold is a useful method of attaining higher, or even just "different," consciousness.
