Celebration: It's Over (or Will Be)

Hi everybody. Use the comments section to suggest ideas for our end-of-the-year party. You deserve some celebrating! Where? When? How? Share your ideas and then we'll talk about them in class.

Doreen brings up the point that Friday, May 25 is Labor Day weekend. I agree with her that this won't work for our party. She suggests the Tuesday, May 22. Another possibility is May 30 (a Wednesday), the day before graduation. This might make the most sense.

What do people think? Good date? Any ideas about where? Someone's apartment? A park? Somewhere in Manhattan? A bar? A restaurant?

Marwan:

Anyone's house free for this? Hopefully we won't wreck it (lol).

Doreen:

If we want to do a night out I suggest it be after exams so that hopefully everyone can make it and no one will have to leave early to study- maybe friday 25th May?

The Mind's Torque Wrench :

It would definitely have to be during the absence of exams and such.

virtual light:

if we do it on friday, what time would it start?

Doreen:

I'm the one who suggested the friday after exams... but!.. have since realised that Friday is Mem. Day weekend...so that may not suit a few people ?
Another suggestion is Tuesday 22nd, as we are used to Tuesdays, or the Wednesday 23rd?.. both are during finals week. Perhaps people could post what nights are no good...Would be great to have us all at the party

optimus2g:

I can' do it on Tuesday 5/22. I still have to plan lessons for the 2 classes I student teach. Friday 5/25th is the best date in my opinion. Regardless of Memorial Day being on Monday, Friday sounds just right for this---people do work during the week too. Also consider the fact that people are taking exams during the week too. It defeats the purpose of having a party. The night before graduation is okay I guess...Wed. night 5/30. My vote though is Fri. night 5/25.

Tina:

I am up for any day, but wanted to remind everyone my yard is still andoption.

virtual light:

the 22nd, 23rd are impossible for me
friday works but i'll have to leave around 7...
wish i could be more helpful : )

Doreen:

My vote's now Wed May 30th. I like the whole bbq/outside idea - Tina's yard or Flushing Park.
But if people want to go out in Manhattan, I can suggest a bar downtown - Swifts - it would be quietish during the week. Has long tables in the back we could all sit at, beer min $5 but cheap pub grub. See website - has menu, drinks list, pics : http://www.ulyssesbarnyc.com/swift/index.html

True Romance:

I prefer the city also...

milquetoast:

Friday May 25 or Wednesday May 30th work for me. I just need to know within reasonable time so I can let my job know. Also, I'm really not too enthused about going to Manhattan. I have a house with a pretty big backyard, (over an acre)...but I live in Melville (just east of the Suffolk/Nassau border) so I'm pretty sure ya'll arent going to want to come out here (even though I do it everyday!) But it's an offer.

Bob:

Melville's fine with me, as I'm used to driving all over Long Island (I live in Suffolk now and have lived in Nassau), but I understand if it isn't do-able for others. Manhattan is fine with me; I personally like pubs. As for the date, the 30th seems OK for me, though definitely not the 28th because I have another dinner/party planned then.

Anthony:

May 25th or May 30th are fine for me. I like the idea of a barbeque, either in Flushing Meadow Park or at Tina's house. But I like pub's too, so if people want to do that, that's also cool. =)

virtual light:

why did we chose may 30th instead of the 29th?
personally, i vote against the pub/resturaunt idea, if we're somewhere outdoors or in an apartment we can move around and mingle more... and no one has to eat or drink anything, they can just sort of chill

Sonomas:

I believe the college-wide honors ceremony is on the 29th. The 25th works for me, especially in the city since I'll already be there for work. But the 30th works also. The outdoors does sound like fun.

tina:

I spoke to my mother. She said she does not mind if you want to use our indoor or outdoor space. I do not know what we want to do, but my mom said if we all contributing food she and I can make macaroni salad, hamburgers/cheeseburgers, hotdogs, and peppers, sausage and onions. My mom said if the weather is nice, she can open the door between our dining and yard area and we can have total access so people who want to sit outside can, and people who prefer the inside can. We can also set up a long table in my house for dinner, and then put small tables and chair outside for later in the evening. I just hope it will be ending earlier over later because graduation is the next day.

Hope this helps.

Tina

I think this is really really good of Tina and her Mother, but it sound like a lot of work for both of them (!) the night before graduation. I have another pub suggestion that may solve the indoor/outdoor question - The Bohemian Beer Hall in Astoria (near N train).
Their own website is pretty bad but this review has a slideshow with pics.

Anthony:

The more I think about it, the more I think we should do Flushing Meadow Park. The Park is huge and expansive. It's beautiful on a Spring afternoon, and people can enjoy the park while we all lounge around, drink, eat barbequeue, and chill. It's right by school, there's free parking lots, it's accessible by the number 7 train, people can even bring their bikes who live close. I don't feel right putting Tina and her mother through so much work for this thing, especially if we are going to do it the day before graduation. Flushing Meadow is like the nicest park in the city, every bit as good to me as Central Park even. If people want to wander off for a bit, they've got the zoo, the skate rink, boating, museums, ball courts, walking and biking paths, and bunches of other stuff. Provided the weather is good though, the fields where we can barbeque will be lovely in themselves, and we shouldn't need anything. We can just bring our stuff, set up, and chill. If it rains and we have to be inside, then we can go to a pub or something, but if not, why not enjoy the day relaxed in the outdoors in the big, beautiful park?

Lily Briscoe:

I agree with Anthony. (repeating yourself three times is very persuasive!)Flushing Meadow is a good centralized location for us all to meet. But if the weather does not cooperate, we should have a plan B. Maybe the pub Doreen mentioned. It looks nice.

tina:

OK, since this is the blog for the party, I am going to bring macaroni and potato salad and a jar of pickles. I can also bring a bottle of soda, just let me know.

Anthony:

I'll bring the grill and a cooler of beer!
