The Unconsoled

Here are some reflections about The Unconsoled. My first very astute observation of the book was 'Hey, this is kind of weird!'

Bird

I dont remember much about this dream, only that one of my best friends was in it. I was uneasy about something and then out of nowhere came these molting fake looking red parrots. They weren't even flying it just looked like someone was flinging them around. Red feathers were everywhere. That's all I remember, but the fact is, I can't get these fake gaudy looking birds out of my head! Why is this?

Project Reflections

Even the cover is dreamlike!

The basic premise is that the “language of dreaming” is used in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s book One Hundred Years of Solitude to as a way to retell the narrative of Latin American history. This topic was the culmination on some thinking about post-colonial lit and dream theory. There hasn’t been any criticism that I know of that directly comments on the dream-like qualities of the book, which makes me pretty excited about my paper. What I’m realizing now that the semester has ended and I’ve been able to step back from the work is that there are 3 let me call dream “modes” going on in the book. First there is the fact that the bizarreness involved (the magical realism part) makes the whole novel itself is dreamlike. Then, there are the characters that represent the archetypes of the collective unconscious. And last, there are the dreams of the characters themselves. (Well, maybe the last two could count as one.) But anyway, I’ve found the whole process interesting and pretty exciting sometimes. There’s just something about finding info. in your research that applies directly to your thesis that makes you want o scream out YES, I’m a genius! But this feeling quickly subsides, unfortunately. I feel like I’m writing 5 papers at the same time. I’m just happy I’m writing a paper on a book I love, and reveals something new every time I read it. I’m also happy that we have a month to work on it…

On the 6.. or the F ?

I couldn’t sleep at all last night. I was feeling pretty sick and finally dozed off around 5am. In any case, I had another dream about the subway. The subway has appeared in my dreams very frequently. It’s never been in a good context though, never like “Hey, I’m taking the train to get candy, or see Santa.” Nope. It’s always negative, as in “Hey, I’m lost on the subway again.”

The Unconsoled 2

On first reading this book I thought it was a little strange but I let myself be taken by it because I thought that was the whole point. After reading it, I still feel like that was the point.

A question

After reading a post I just remembered this um "phenomenon" that happens to me a lot. I don't think it's sleep paralysis, but frequently in the middle of the night I'll wake up and for a about 10 seconds I can't recognize where I am. I sort of look around with my eyes and try to recognize the setting. I see all the objects in my room but it doesn't click. I have a fear that I'm in someplace not my house, perhaps someone else's house or on vacation somewhere. It's all pretty frightening until I somehow force myself to remember where I am. Has anyone ever experienced something like this?
