Went to see the movie last night and I enjoyed it quite a bit ^_^ It had a very erm... French feel, no surprise there. There were a lot of aspects of the movie that had more meaning because of all the reading we've been doing in/for class...
The movie pretty much starts off with the ingredients of what makes up dreams, which I thought was a very cool beginning. Memories, reminisences, the events of the day... The main character, Stephane (I'd actually already forgotten his name and had to goggle...) was throwing them into this big pot and mixing. Made me laugh because it was like seeing a mad scientist in his lab, but he was in his own mind. Looking out through his eyes were visually represented as looking through shuttered windows.
The dream sequences in this movie were very surreal and at other times very realistic. The fragments and just the detail that goes into them is amazing. There's this one where an entire city is made out of cardboard, and it has such a cartoon-ish feel but... so damn cool. And then Stephane is flying through the air, or he has huge bloated hands... I also absolutely loved the idea of cellophane as water. I saw Jung, Freud and Hartmann in this movie, or things that are attributed to them in my brain. Though this movie had a twist on the Oedipus complex, since instead of seeing his mother in the woman he started liking, he saw his father.
Stephane as a character is extremely eccentric but if there was someone like him in my life, I can say that I'd probably never get bored. I highly recommend the movie, especially because the imagery is wow, in my opinion. It's serious at parts, then funny at parts, but do get used to the though of reading subtitles half the time...
