Dreams as Prophecy? . . .

It occurs to me I’m not remembering my dreams because I’m not sleeping enough. The dreams I remember seem to be after a long, delicious nights’ sleep . . . So, in place of a dream, I’d like to share a dream that my co-worker Nancy had featuring yours truly.

First, the set-up: It was a couple of summers ago, and my sister and I went to Robert Moses beach for our usual weekend visit with the sun. I ran into a very nice co-worker (married) from my old job with his two small children who was there with another father and his kids. How sweet. He didn’t remember me right away (I guess he’d never seen me in a bathing suit before), but we ended up chatting about the old job and our lives. We agreed to have lunch if he was near my job – just friendly – no interest other than friends on my part AT ALL (emphasis mine :).

Back at work on Monday, I tell Nancy about running into my former co-worker. That night she had a dream that I went to coffee with some guy, but he wanted more than coffee. We laughed it off. This guy had NEVER hit on me, and I didn’t get that vibe at the beach. Besides, I was sure he wasn’t going to call me for lunch anyway.

A few days later, he calls and invites me to lunch. On the way to the restaurant, he made a crack about seeing me in a bathing suit, and I knew what was coming. After lunch (right on cue) he invited me to go to a hotel. Just in case you’re wondering, I said no. (No Data The Married Man). This sequence of events all happened within a week.

So is this a prophetic dream, or her intuition? My friend also dreamt about small prop planes going down in the water right before the death of John Kennedy, Jr. In class, we haven’t really spoken a lot about prophetic dreams, but I would love to know if anyone else has experienced this.

I am pretty sceptical about dreams being prophetic, but on my blog I also recount a co-workers dream that has a prophetic feel to it, as the person speaking to her in her dream is her father-in-law who passed away. I find that it is easy to discount a dream that seems to have some wisdom about what is going to happen when you just read it, but when you know the real people involved (as you do here) then it is harder to dismiss it, especially if you know your friend to be rational, not gullible, etc. I don't think people can predict the future, but perhaps some intuitive people are good as sensing future possibilities, and then they often turn out to be right.

I'm pretty skeptical about prophetic dreams though I do think, once in a while, that dreams can hit the mark quite closely. I'm more inclined to believe it was just her intuition, and maybe something she unconsciously noticed in the way you told her about your former co-worker that you didn't even pick up on. But maybe your friend is very sensitive with dreams, and they turn out to be true or happen...

vI sometimes have dreams where I will remember where I put my keys, when I spent a complete day of looking for them. Point being, sometimes dreams help us remember things we can not in our waking state. From remembering our theorists, it was mentioned some of the great ideas and inventions were thought up from dreams. This being mentioned, it is not impossible that the inhibition of intuition in our conscious lives can be expressed through our dreams. I would like to know more about prophetic dreams also.
