Background : Susan is my close friend in work. Her father-in-law died two years ago. She misses him and says she often thinks about him. His name is Jeff and he was a tailor all his life. It was just after a vacation she had this year, when she admits that she was so relaxed that she was not thinking about him at all, when she had this dream.
Dream : Jeff was standing across from Susan in her dream, complaining that his wife did not leave his sewing machine neat, that she wasn't maintaining it. He said that there were knotted threads under the bobbin and that is why he could not sew with it.He said he needed to use it, to make a jacket because sometimes it's cold where he is. Susan could see that he was holding some type of clothing. It was an unusual bright blue color, but the garment was like an all-in-one outfit with a hood, in a size that would fit a baby. Susan asked him how he could fit into it and he said he would.
Aftermath: Susan was intrigued by Jeff speaking to her, it seemed, from beyond the grave. We were talking about it at work, so she decided to call her mother-in-law then to tell her about it.
Her mother-in-law, Ann, said that the night before (the same night Susan had the dream) she had been making curtains for the daughter she lived with, and that was the only night she had left the sewing machine uncovered, meaning to continue the next night. Then they began joking on the phone that Jeff was always too fussy about that sewing machine.
After that conversation, Ann went to work on the curtains again the following evening. When she started using the sewing machine it seized up immediately and she ran out of the room. Later on she checked why and found that there were knots from previous threads stuck under the needle and bobbin. (This is exactly what Susan said Jeff had told her in the dream.) Ann then felt guilty that she had been joking about Jeff, as if he had heard. The machine was unusable until the threads were removed with a tool.
Interpretation : Bear with me, but if we totally ignore Freud, Jung and the world of Science and for a few moments and go with the possibility that dead people can speak to us… (???!)but...just bear with that line of thought along for a few seconds … then we presume Jeff, through the dream, is coming to Susan to tell her something. If Jeff still 'exists' somewhere, is he hoping to 'come back' and that is why he will need clothes. Meanwhile his married daughter, whom Ann is living with now is trying to get pregnant. Will he come back as a baby, perhaps his daughters baby, dressed in an unusual shade of blue?
I will backtrack now from this fantasy and admit that I am skeptical. Susan has some belief in re-incarnation, knows her sister-in-law wants to gets pregnant and she misses her father-in-law BUT I still admit that the timing of the dream is a little eerie. Perhaps we can go back to Jung here, after all, and in relation to Susan and Ann think "telepathy". Or not at all as exciting, just
put it down to coincidence. It may depend on a baby in blue....watch this space....

This is a strange concept you've brought up here. Taking the dream alone, I might have brought up the Jungian idea of compensation, compensation for Susan suddenly not thinking about Jeff, but this is far more interesting.
Is psychic ability possible? Certainly it would play to Jung's idea of the collective unconscious. But, to me, this all seems logical enough to be explained away as coincidence. Susan thinks of Jeff as a tailor, so if Susan believes in this psychic stuff and dreams up a scenario like this it seems logical enough that this would be Jeff's concern in her eyes- the sewing machine and clothing. And as for Ann, this seems a normal enough way to misuse a sewing machine.
